Mia has decided to name the mustang Aspen. The mustang came from the holding pen in Burns, Oregon. We did some research on the area and learned that one of the common trees in that area is the Aspen. Mia liked the name and chose it for the mustang.
For the first week Mia did not do too much with her, in order to give her a chance to settle in. She seems in very good health and very calm. However, she is very timid and unsure of people. She will allow Mia to approach her and give her a quick pat to the neck or nose. She will give us a sniff but immediately back away.
During week two, the weather was not our friend. Winter storm Stella blew in with high winds and over a foot of snow. Although Aspen had adequate shelter, we were very concerned that she was without a blanket. We unsuccessfully tried to get a blanket on her, to no avail. Thankfully, despite the snow and strong winds, the temperature was not bitterly cold, and Aspen made it through the storm just fine. All the cold and the snow did set Mia back on her training a little bit though. Attempting round penning in over a foot of snow is challenging as we found out!
Regardless of the challenges the weather has caused for us, Aspen continues to progress. She becomes more and more comfortable with us as Mia spends more time in her paddock, feeding her warm soaked hay pellets and just talking to her and touching her. By the end of week two she was able to touch her all over her head and neck back to her withers.
